EMAN E-NEWSLETTER July 20th, 2012
The little breaks of sweet relief from the heat waves don’t last nearly long enough. Leaving a cool building and going outside feels like walking into a bowl of soup these days. But this, too, will pass..............although we might have to wait till October............... Unfortunately, burglars and graffiti vandals don’t take the Summer off. All kinds of property crimes spike in the Summer. Open car and house windows create additional opportunities for thieves.
I am happy to tell you that EMAN’s “Swing Into Summer” fundraiser was a fun evening for everyone involved. Although attendance was lower than we’d hoped, we did raise some much-needed money for operating expenses, largely because we have some very loyal and supportive sponsors in the local business community. The Larry DiFranco Team at Elfant Wissahickon Realtors Robin and Jerome Mitchell, proprietors of The Gathering Place, really did provide a wonderful, relaxing space --- and are among the nicest people I’ve ever met. What a great addition to the neighborhood.
Activities quiet down a bit in the Summer, but there are still regular ongoing events in the neighborhood. A great source of information about what’s happening in Mt. Airy is www.gomtairy.com ; it’s worth checking when you're looking for something to do in the area.. The Mt. Airy Farmers Market is happening every Thursday from 3 till 7, at Greene & Carpenter………. a great source of fresh, local food. Mt. Airy USA’s “Moonlight Movies” series continues on Friday nights at Lovett Park (the space next to Lovett Library); rain location is the carriage house at Cliveden of the National Trust. You can purchase dinner or a snack from the featured food trucks before the movie starts, or bring your own. The selected films are family-friendly. And free! Join friends and neighbors on the last Friday of every month for Final-ly Friday events on the Avenue. On the 27th, Mt. Airy will celebrate the start of the 2012 Summer Olympics, and you can watch the opening ceremonies on a big screen. Our shops and restaurants will be offering Olympics-themed specials. The Mt. Airy Art Garage is offering Summer classes in a variety of media, and there are still some spaces available, so it’s not too late. Go to www.mtairyartgarage.org for details. Walk A Crooked Mile Books (in the Mt. Airy train station on the Chestnut Hill East line) always has something going on --- among the activities are book sales, live entertainment, and the popular Train Station Yard Sales. (The next big yard sale is on Saturday, July 28th.) Go to their website (www.WalkACrookedMileBooks.com) for up-to-date schedules and other info. The Chew & Belfield Neighbors Club (CBNC) is gearing up for its academic year math tutoring program. It starts on September 15th and runs through May 2013, (every Saturday morning from 10 till noon at the Joseph Coleman Northwest Regional Library, 68 W. Chelten Ave.). To register or to volunteer, call 215-849-8021 or go to www.chewandbelfield.webs.com
SAVE THE DATE!
OTHER IMPORTANT INFO: A new zoning code for Philadelphia will go into effect on August 22nd. The Citizens Planning Institute is offering several free workshops in August, at locations throughout the city. Spaces are limited and you must register to attend. For additional info, go to http://citizensplanninginstitute.org and click on “Zoning Code Summer Workshops.” As you know, there’s a new Voter ID law in Pennsylvania; voters must present certain acceptable forms of photo ID in order to vote in November. EMAN has joined the strictly-nonpartisan PA Voter ID Coalition, (a project of the Committee of Seventy), which is working to provide information about acceptable forms of ID (and other aspects of this new law), and to help citizens without an acceptable photo ID obtain one. It is important to us that every citizen is able to vote, no matter their party affiliation or preferences.
While we don’t meet regularly in the Summer, EMAN is working year-round to preserve and enhance the quality of life in our community. Memberships are welcome at any time; you can join at our website (www.eastmountairy.org) using PayPal. Our next scheduled Community/Board Meeting will be on Tuesday evening, September 11th. You’re invited to join us, and to get involved in neighborhood activities. We look forward to meeting you! |
